Let's look at an assignment that will allow you to explore environmental issues and stories of your choice. This will help to reinforce concepts learned during the course. |
Each Environment Diary involves
you collecting four environmental articles from
various internet sources.

Example "Banff to pave a little more of paradise?" http://www.newsworld.cbc.ca/Posted Jun 08, 1998 10:38 PM EDT"Some difficult decisions have to be made about Banff National Park. Banff's council has approved new commercial zoning for a town already bursting with development. Heritage Minister Sheila Copps is responsible for Canada's national park system. On Monday Copps said she'll reject the plan if it could jeopardize the park's status as a World Heritage site. Copps says that for people living in a national park, the privilege comes with responsibilities. "And those responsibilities include ensuring that in your quest for commercial space you don't lose sight of the fact there's more to life than shopping centres," Copps said. Environmentalists say Banff doesn't need any more hotels, and the existing town is already encroaching on nature. Banff's mayor says the town must stay competitive with expanding resorts such as Whistler and Lake Louise. The new proposals, the mayor says, involve adding floors to existing buildings, and do not involve any undeveloped land. The only part of the project that involves new land is a major hotel that has already been approved. Copps says she'll give her response to council in the next few weeks". Summary Who: Banff National Park and its future. What: Banff City Council has approved new commercial zoning to allow further development such as a hotel in order to keep up with tourist towns such as Whistler. Environmentalists though are concerned that further growth will hurt nature. Heritage Minister Sheila Copps is also concerned arguing that "there's more to life than shopping centres". When: Monday June 8, 1998 Where: Banff National Park, Alberta Why: Differing viewpoints on how a resource should be used has led to this controversy. On the one hand, there is the town council which desires to expand its economy with further amenities for tourists, whereas environmentalists argue that preservation of the natural environment is paramount. How: This issue should be solved in the next few weeks as the Heritage Minister will decide whether or not the commercial development can proceed.
